Planning a tubing trip, a weekend of camping, or just a relaxing day by the water? The San Marcos River is one of the best spots in Texas to unwind, cool off, and connect with nature. At San Marcos River Resort, we’re here to help you make the most of your visit—Whether you’re floating down the river, kayaking along the current, or simply relaxing by the water, we’re here to help you make the most of your time.
This guide will walk you through everything you need to know for your river adventure, from what to pack to where to stay.
The San Marcos River begins at Aquarena Springs in San Marcos, Texas, and flows southeast for about 75 miles until it meets the Guadalupe River just west of Gonzales. Along the way, it creates county borders and passes through historic Texas towns like Prairie Lea, Martindale, Fentress, and Luling. Because it’s fed by the Edwards Aquifer, the water stays a refreshing 72 degrees year-round and keeps flowing even during long droughts.
This river has been part of human history for over 10,000 years. Early people of the Clovis culture once lived along its banks, and later, the Tonkawa people were known to camp near the river. Spanish explorers began arriving in the 1600s and gave the river different names over the years, but “San Marcos” eventually became the most widely used. After Texas became part of the U.S., communities started to grow along the river. The first dam was built in 1849 to power a mill, and towns like San Marcos, Prairie Lea, and Luling began to thrive nearby. While the river faced pollution problems in the mid-20th century, better water treatment helped it bounce back. Today, it’s a natural treasure—home to rare species like Texas wild rice—and a favorite destination for tubing, fishing, and riverside camping. Learn more about the History of San Marcos River.
Tubing the San Marcos River is one of the best ways to enjoy it. To have a fun and safe float, wear a swimsuit or clothes that dry quickly, and be sure to wear secure water shoes—flip-flops are likely to float away. Sunscreen is a must, and so is a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated in the sun. A hat, sunglasses with a strap, and a waterproof pouch for your phone or keys can make your trip more comfortable. Many people also bring snacks and a towel for afterward.
We run a convenient hourly shuttle from 10 AM to 6 PM to help you float with ease. The tubing route takes about two hours from start to finish. If you rent a tube from San Marcos River Resort, your shuttle ride is free for the entire day. If you’re bringing your own tube, you can still use the shuttle for just $8 per person.
